Between 1847 and 1863, Puddletown was a center for industrial activity, known as the Furnace District. It was home to an iron foundry, iron works, charcoal pits, and some tenement houses. The district's name came from the term "puddling.” This was a method of creating high-quality bar iron that was low in sulfur and other impurities.
